Bhopal:Madhya Pradesh govt is planning to implement
Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by Diwali, advancing BJP's long-standing core agenda.
Chief minister Mohan Yadav has tasked the home department with preparing a draft bill within six months after studying UCC laws enacted in Uttarakhand and Gujarat. A state-level committee comprising legal experts, officials, and community representatives will be formed to oversee the process.
"It is essential to have the same set of laws for every citizen in the country. Every person must have the same rights. With the UCC, the country's unity, integrity, and a better future will be ensured," said cooperatives minister Vishwas Sarang.
Leader of opposition in the assembly, Umang Singhar, cautioned the govt: "Everyone should be consulted and taken into confidence by the govt before the law is framed."
Uttarakhand became the first state to implement UCC in 2025, mandating the registration of marriages, divorces, and live-in relationships, with penalties for non-compliance. Gujarat followed in March 2026, introducing equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters, compulsory registration of live-in relationships, and criminalising polygamy (with certain exemptions for Scheduled Tribes).
BJP has consistently positioned UCC as part of its "one nation, one law" vision, linking it to national integration and gender equality.
