BHOPAL: Over 70% of mental health patients do not reach out treatment, said AIIMS Bhopal professor and HoD psychiatry here on Monday. Various events were held in the city to mark World Mental Health Day on Monday.

“The burden of mental disorders is huge. As per the National mental health survey (2015-16), the prevalence of mental illness is around 14% and for majority of cases the treatment gap of 70%-80%. Reaching the unreached persons with mental illnesses is a challenge,” he said. He is also a principal investigator for an on-going study on ‘Impact of Covid-19 on availability, access, utilisation of mental health services and coping strategies used by registered patients with mental illness: a multi-centric study’.

World Mental Health Day is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. AIIMS Bhopal department of psychiatry and nursing college organised the event that was attended by institute officials and MP NHM mission director, Priyanka Das. She virtually inaugurated an Addiction Treatment Facility at Primary Health Centre in Misrod.
