Jaw slashed, neck cut, body dragged: Woman killed after resisting rape bid in MP; accused lynched by angry mob
BHOPAL: A 21-year-old woman was brutally killed with a sharp-edged weapon allegedly by a 25-year-old man who first tried to rape her in a village in Raisen district on Monday afternoon.
Angry over the incident, the villagers caught the accused and badly beat him up. The accused later succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a hospital.
According to police, the woman was going to deliver lunch to her brother at a field in the village when she was intercepted by a man from the same village, who allegedly attempted to rape her.
When she resisted, he allegedly attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon, striking her on the jaw and neck and killing her on the spot. After the assault, the accused dragged her body into a field.
Police are probing the sexual assault angle based on circumstantial evidence found at the spot. The accused fled from the spot but was tracked down by villagers near the Ghoghra river in the Kamror area. He was beaten up by locals and later died during treatment at a hospital.
Additional SP Raisen, Kamlesh Kharpuse, told TOI, "Both the deceased are from the same ST community and are neighbours. The accused youth allegedly attempted to rape the woman. When he failed, he attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon. Later, the locals searched for him, caught him, and thrashed him. He too died during treatment. So far, a total of six people have been rounded up. Force was deployed in the village as a precautionary measure, but the situation is normal. There is no tension in the village as of now."
Police registered a murder case on the complaint of the woman's family, while a separate probe was initiated into the accused's death. Further action will be based on post-mortem and forensic reports.
