BHOPAL: A 40-year-old history-sheeter staggered into Kamla Nagar police station in the wee hours of Sunday, sobbing that he had been bobbitised. Police were with him in hospital when they were informed that his younger sister had been found dead, hanging from the door jamb of her house.
Till late Monday, police were still trying to find out who chopped off his genitals and why his sister committed suicide, and if there was any connection between the two other than a bizarre coincidence.

Sub-inspector Devendra Amb, the investigation officer in both cases, said that 40-year-old Sohanlal Pardi, a resident of Naya Basera, has a long crime record and that his wife is in prison. Cops at Kamla Nagar police station were puzzled to see a man staggering towards them at 3am on Sunday. He was in distress and mumbling that two men chopped off his genitals with a pair of garden shears. He seemed drunk, too.
He said that he had walked 2km to the police station in that condition, and then began mumbling that he had bobbitised himself. Initially, police thought Sohanlal was creating a nuisance but then they saw streaks of blood on his trousers and legs and took him to JP Hospital, from where he was shifted to Hamidia Hospital.
SI Amb said that around 6am, police were informed of an apparent suicide in Naya Basera. When a patrol team went there, they were stunned to learn that the 35-year-old victim, Saroj Bai Pardi, was the sister of the bobbitised man they had just put in hospital. Her body was found hanging on her shanty door. Sohanlal’s house is next door — in fact, both shanties share a common toilet. Amb said that Sohanlal’s kin went to Hamidia and shifted him to a private hospital in Malviya Nagar, where he is undergoing treatment. Police are trying to take down his statement but he initially gave contradictory versions, said an officer.

When Sohanlal first approached police, he told cops that a scrap dealer, with whom he had quarrelled three days ago, and another person barged into his shanty around 9.30pm on Saturday when he was in the toilet.
The duo chopped off his private parts with garden scissors, he said, adding that he fell unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he decided to go to police. However, he was also murmuring that he himself hacked off his organ.
Saroj Bai’s husband, Jafar, was away, attending a wedding in Sehore and while her mother-in-law Ram Siya Bai had gone to her daughter’s house in the locality, Amb said. Ram Siya Bai told cops that neighbours told her around 5.30am on Sunday that Saroj was hanging from her shanty’s door. She informed police, and told them that Saroj, too, was being threatened by a scrap dealer for the past week. No suicide note has been found, deepening the mystery.
“We are trying to see if there is a link in the two cases. There are no eyewitnesses who saw anyone entering Sohanlal’s shanty,” the SI said. Saroj’s body was sent for post-mortem and the report is awaited.
