JABALPUR: A baraat in Jabalpur had to take a U-turn, after the bride refused to marry on finding the groom to be drunk.
The woman’s refusal triggered tension between both sides of the family, and police had to intervene to settle the issue. The situation was such, that the bride’s family had kept the baraatis hostage.
Patan police station in charge, Shivraj Singh Chauhan said, “Marriage of a Jabalpur woman and a Sagar man was being held at Nunsar on Sunday.”
Police withheld the names of the bride and groom to protect the identity of the family. “During the initial greeting ceremony, the bride’s family found that the groom was drunk. When they confronted his family, they said, he does not consume alcohol. The bride refused to marry the drunk groom.”
“Soon after a dispute broke out over returning the gifts exchanged between them. The bride’s family held the baraati hostage. Police contained the situation and an agreement was reached, after which the baarat returned to Sagar,” he said. “I am happy with my daughter’s decision. She has a master's degree in engineering. We cannot put her through hell,” the woman’s father told TOI.
