Amid protests, BU weighs retaining Barkatullah name on campus building

Bhopal: As protests continue over the proposed renaming of Barkatullah University to Vagdevi Bhojpal University, the university is considering a compromise aimed at addressing concerns while allowing the renaming process to move forward.

University officials have proposed retaining the Barkatullah name on a prominent campus facility, most likely the central library or the main auditorium. The proposal is being presented as a symbolic gesture to preserve the institution’s historical identity while implementing the state government’s decision.

The move comes in response to demonstrations by students, faculty members and local residents who oppose the removal of the Barkatullah name. Protesters have organised peaceful rallies, submitted petitions and met university authorities, arguing that the name is closely tied to the institution’s legacy and the city’s history.
