BENGALURU/KOLAR: A 21-year-old pregnant woman travelling on the Bengaluru-Nanded Express alighted after developing labour pain and delivered twins on the platform of Gauribidanur railway station in Kolar at 1.40am on Thursday.

Chandramma was travelling with her mother in the general coach. The train left KSR Bengaluru station around 11.30pm on Wednesday. Additional divisional railway manager Kusuma Hariprasad said the woman and her mother purchased tickets to travel from Bengaluru to Chittapur in Kalaburagi district. Chandramma, who is originally from Chittapur, lives in Benglauru.

The official said when the train reached Doddaballapur station, Nataraj, a railway police personnel, noticed commotion in the general coach over Chandramma developing labour pain and alerted his colleagues who were on duty in the train.

Nagabhushan, head constable attached to Doddaballapur railway outpost, who was guarding the train along with colleague Lakkappa, said as soon as co-passengers brought the matter to his notice he told them that the train was to reach Gauribidanur station in a few minutes but if the woman wished they would halt the train immediately and call an ambulance.

Chandramma preferred to wait till Gauribidanur station and Nagabhushan requested the authorities to rush an ambulance there. Nagabhushan said the woman had reportedly completed eight months of pregnancy and was set to deliver in another fortnight. At Gauribidanur, Chandramma alighted and was waiting for the ambulance during which time her pain increased and she was made to lie down on platform no. 2. With help from women travellers, she gave birth to two baby boys, said Nagabhushan.

Within minutes of the delivery, the ambulance arrived and she was taken to a hospital in Gauribidanur. Railway staffers, including Manjula and pointsman Ravi, assisted the ambulance staff, said Srinivasa Rao, station master, Gauribidanur.

Chandramma's husband Kuber, a mason, was alerted by then and he rushed to Mother and Children Hospital, Gauribidanur.

The babies weighed 2.3kg and 2.5kg, said Dr Lakshmikanth, administrative officer of the hospital. He said the mother and kids are doing fine and will be discharged after 48 hours.
