The new floor will ensure students of two classes 1 and 2 don’t have to jostle for space as they currently share a single room. Reshma, 10, a student, said: “We are so happy that our classroom looks new.”
Smart technology in their classrooms include a projector, white board, audio-visual aids and recording equipment along with pre-loaded lesson plans for English, maths, science, environmental sciences and general knowledge. The kit includes quizzes and other modules. A one-day crash course on how to use the technology was held for five teachers.
The project became a reality with the support of city-based charitable organisation, Harmony.
Located in Annasandraplaya, the school started in 1960s and has been catering to the educational needs of children from the neighbourhood. Lakshmikala, an alumna who has turned teacher, told TOI: “This school came up in bits and pieces with contributions from everyone. Many donors have helped over the years by building toilets, classrooms and staff rooms. There were only two classrooms when I used to study here,” she said.
The school won the National Award of Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar in 2016-17 for excellence in hygiene. Obalappa, principal for the last 23 years, said they want to turn it into a model school. “We are proud to be recognized at the national level despite the fact that we started with barely anything,” he said.
