BENGALURU: BY Vijayendra on Sunday met with former chief minister and JD(S) state president HD Kumaraswamy for the first time after officially taking charge as Karnataka BJP president, a meeting that was significant since the two parties have tied up for next year’s Lok Sabha elections.

The two met for close to 45 minutes at Kumaraswamy’s farmhouse in Bidadi, on the outskirts of Bengaluru, and are believed to have thrashed out a possible course of action on their alliance. However, both insisted that they did not discuss seat-sharing for the Lok Sabha elections. Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil was also present.

Vijayendra told reporters the meeting was essentially a “courtesy” after taking over as state BJP president. “Both BJP and JD(S) will try to ensure victory in all 28 Lok Sabha seats with the sole intent of ensuring Narendra Modi gets re-elected as Prime Minister in 2024,” said Vijayendra and Kumaraswamy.

When asked of opposition within BJP over his appointment and disgruntlement in the ranks over the alliance, Vijayendra dismissed it saying they “were but small differences” which will be sorted out.

“The whole of BJP is united in achieving one goal — that of getting the Modi government back to power in 2024,” said Vijayendra. Kumaraswamy said even Vijayendra, as state BJP president, is working on ironing out differences in the cadre and that, along with his son Nikhil, will bring a “new wave” into Karnataka politics.

“Even now people speak of how former chief minister BS Yediyurappa and I and our coalition government laid the foundation for Karnataka’s growth with our schemes,” Kumaraswamy said. “The next generation of leaders including Vijayendra and my son Nikhil along with other leaders in both parties will hopefully take it forward to greater heights.”

The two said they did discuss strategies on how to tackle the Congress government during the upcoming winter session of the legislature in Belagavi. “However, we will have another round of talks in Belagavi before finalising our plans to take on the governing party,” said Kumaraswamy.
