BANGALORE: Vidhana Soudha, the seat of power, will no longer be an impregnable fortress for the common man. Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Tuesday ordered the state's police chief B S Sial to relax restrictions on movement of people around Vidhana Soudha."People come here to get their problems redressed. They should not be stopped at the gates of Vidhana Soudha in the name of security,"Kumaraswamy told Sial.
Coming at a time when the police are making all efforts to stave off possible terrorist strikes on vital installations, the CM's directive has put the police in a quandary. With the threat perception being high after the IISc attack, police had restricted the entry of visitors to Vidhana Soudha. They had also prepared a comprehensive security plan that calls for thorough screening of people and baggage entering Vidhana Soudha. "Five years ago, anyone could have walked in and out of Vidhana Soudha without any problem. But now the security scenario has changed, even small lapses would cause major embarrassment to the government,"a senior police officer said. However, Kumaraswamy doesn't agree. "Providing security to VIPs is the duty of police, but that cannot be done at the cost of a common man's freedom. Overdoing things in the name of security should not happen,"he said. Pointing out how the security mechanism works in advanced countries, he told the police to monitor the movements of people covertly.
