This rly station lacks basic facilities
HAVERI: The town of Haveri, which was elevated to the status of district headquarters about five years ago, has facilities in short supply.
One such instance of inadequate facilities in the district is the railway station. The railway station, which came into being more than 75 years ago, does not have the usually preferred double-platform system till date.
In the absence of the double platform system, the aged and invalid have been facing the problem while getting down from the train or boarding whenever two trains land here at the same time.
1x1 polls

This happens almost thrice a week in the morning whenever there is a crossing between Bangalore-Hubli passenger and Bangalore-bound Inter-City train. The requests by citizens to the higher authorities have not been fulfilled.
The double-platform system provides getting down from or boarding the train from either side. In other words, no crossing of tracks when the train pulls up at the far end, away from the platform.
In this era of computers and online reservation of tickets, the Haveri railway station has the dubious distinction of having not a single computer. The raj era practice of reserving seats still exists.
Under this system, each station is allotted a certain number of seats for trains passing through the town, no matter how crowded or empty the trains are. This kind of uncertainty is not faced with the online reservation where the status of seats and berths could be known at the click of a button.

Even for the evening Hubli-Bangalore passenger, there are only seven reserved seats. The requests to increase the quota have fallen on deaf ears. Many people have been going to Hubli for reservation and boarding the train at Haveri. For many trains which pass through the town of Haveri, there is no facility of reservation because of lack of computers.
Surprisingly, some summer special trains which pass through the town of Haveri do not stop here. For example, the Bangalore-Hubli summer special Inter-City train. Recently, a team of citizens led by Haveri MLA and former minister Basavaraj Shivannavar staged a dharna demanding a stopover. The dharna didn''t bear the fruit.
Former Lok Sabha member B.M. Mensinkai, who was elected from the Dharwad South on a Janata Dal ticket, made some earnest efforts to improve the Haveri railway station. But he could not remain an MP for more than two years as Parliament was dissolved and fresh elections were called.
Member of the current Lok Sabha, Imamsab G. Sanadi, appears to be not interested in doing much for the area because he stays in Hubli and rarely visits Haveri, if ever, when he meets a select set of people from Haveri town. And the railway station does not seem to figure in the agenda.
Will the authorities do some thing for the Haveri railway station, which does not have even such basic requirements as public toilets and drinking water supply?
