State on alert mode; borders sealed
BANGALORE: With bird flu breaking out in Maharashtra on Saturday, Karnataka has been put on high alert. The borders have been sealed and alerts sent to the check-posts of Bijapur, Gulbarga, Belgaum and Bagalkot.
"Deputy directors of the areas along with the district administration have been posted at checkposts along the border to thoroughly check vehicles transporting birds," senior officials of the animal husbandry department told the Sunday Times of India.

"They have been told to give regular updates to the office so that we can monitor movement of vehicles across the border before they are allowed to enter the state.
District-level emergency meetings have been called for rapid action; officials have been asked to inspect broiler units, poultry farms and keep vigilance on all water bodies as well," officials informed.
Besides, awareness campaigns too have gained momentum. Three months ago when threats of bird flu loomed over the state, all districts had been covered under the campaign by holding power-point presentations and distributing pamphlets.
"Three months ago, we had held a state-level meeting with the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike in the presence of the Union health minister's health secretary.
A committee was formed to keep an eye on the water bodies, migratory birds, poultry farms, but no case of bird flu was reported then," said deputy director of the department, Bangalore Urban district, Syed Ahmed.

In Bangalore, officials have been collecting samples of migratory birds from Madiwala and Bellandur tanks. All the results have been found negative.
According to BMP additional commissioner Gaurav Gupta, though there were remote threats of bird flu in Bangalore three months ago, it was more specific to people working in poultry farms.
"All poultry agencies should be on high alert. The people needn't panic as the disease does not spread through edible meat. There has still not been any alert from the state government surveillance team," he added.
