BANGALORE: The world, as well as Bangalore, on Tuesday celebrated the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, and his wife Lady Olave Baden-Powell, founder of the Girl Guides movement. Scouts and Guides, Cubs and Bul Buls from various schools participated in the celebration, which was observed as `World Thinking Day'.
In the unique celebration, SK Prabha, headquarters commissioner for training guides section, Bangalore, said: "The world will change on its own by empowering women. Women should have economic independence."
"When it comes to illiteracy, the ratio of women is double compared to men. At least 70% of earning women from the middle and lower middle classes do not have economic independence," she added.
Stressing the need for dedication and commitment towards work, she said, "Scouts and Guides must become a model for society by their dedication. They should set a example and fulfil the dreams of Baden Powell and his wife."
IR Perumal, chief secretary, youth services department, said that students are the future of the nation. "Our success depends on our discipline and dedication. Our future will be in our hand. Taking the nation to a beautiful tomorrow is the responsibility of each student," he said.
Participants had many activities, including quiz and drawing. NS Monisha of Evershine English School in Kalidasa Layout, Srinagar, said: "It is a new learning day for me. Till now, I have been attending camps and classes. But today, I learnt new things on the Guides movement."
