MANGALORE: The annual Sandesha Awards instituted by the Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education have been announced and will be presented here on February 16, Fr Dennis D'Sa, director of Sandesha said here on Sunday.

the sandesha literature award (kannada) will be conferred on former bureaucrat and noted litterateur h.l. nage gowda. the award for konkani literature will be conferred on j.c. viegas from mysore and dr u.p. upadhyaya from udupi for his contribution to tulu language. the sandesha arts award, instituted by sra sisters will be conferred on lingaraj gavai hiremath from hubli. film director rajendra singh babu will receive the cinema award. sandesha special recognition awards in various categories are as follows : dr olinda pereira from mangalore (social work), b.a. sanadi from mumbai (literature, media and culture), h.s. gowramma from sagar (folk painting), karunaashraya in bangalore (compationate service of cancer patients) and birds, belgaum (rural development). the jury for the selection of the awards included prof b.a. vivek rai (chairman), prof amrith someshwar, prof william madtha, fr samuel sequeira, richard louis, sara abubakar, na d'souza and praveen fernandes. former chief minister m. veerappa moily, minister for ports and fisheries b.ramanath rai, mla n. yogish bhat, deputy commissioner a.k. monnappa, regional officer of indian council for cultural relations j.w. lobo and chairman of janamadhyama prakashana ronald colaco will also be present. rs 25 cr for mangalore-hassan gauge union railway minister nitish kumar has released an additional sum of rs 25 crore in the supplementary budget for expediting the mangalore-hassan gauge conversion. according to a release from union minister of state for textiles dhananjaya kumar, these grants were released after he urged the union minister to release more funds for expediting the work. this is part of the rs 898 crore released to the railways department to take up pending works.
