Karnataka has had 19 chief ministers, but except two — S Nijalingappa and D Devaraj Urs — none of them completed their full five-year term.
Various factors have contributed to the curtailed tenures of the chief ministers. For instance, allegations of corruption forced Ramakrishna Hegde to resign in 1985 and later in 1988 — without completing his term on both occasions.
1x1 polls
The Congress had three CMs from 1989 to 1994. During this period, Veerendra Patil was removed for ill-health and S Bangarappa for corruption, before M Veerappa Moily took over.
HD Deve Gowda quit as CM to become prime minister, while SM Krishna dissolved the assembly six months ahead of the completion of his term. Coalition politics from 2004 to 2007 saw two CMs — N Dharam Singh and H D Kumaraswamy. Now, B S Yeddyurappa is demitting office after ruling for 38 months, over allegations of corruption.
Another unique factor is that four persons have taken the CM's gaddi more than once — S Nijalingappa, D Devaraj Urs, Veerendra Patil and Ramakrishna Hegde.
