Need shift from research for knowledge to one that solves real problems: Infosys Science Foundation president
As the Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) marks 17 years of honouring Indian scientists and scholars, its president K Dinesh reflects on how the prize has evolved, the shift towards younger researchers, and the importance of building a culture of excellence that turns ideas into real-world solutions, in an interview to TOI.Excerpts: ■ What must India do to sustain excellence in research? We must nurture excellence until it becomes a habit. As Aristotle said, excellence is not an act but a habit. That culture — combining people, process, and resources — is what leads to innovation. When research moves from the lab to solving real problems, as penicillin once did, society benefits. That's the spirit we must build across India's research ecosystem.■ How has the Infy Prize evolved? What kind of impact has it had on Indian research? The prize was created to recognise outstanding achievements by contemporary researchers and inspire young professionals to pursue science and research as careers. Over the years, we've honoured 104 brilliant minds across disciplines. They are like stars — each shines individually but together, they light the path for others. These role models help raise the level of excellence in our scientific community.Last year, we took an important step by reducing the age limit for winners to 40. This early-career focus allows researchers to build on their work and contribute more over time. We also expect international winners to take sabbaticals in India to share their knowledge with local researchers, as happened recently with a quantum computing expert.■ What structural changes are needed to strengthen India's research ecosystem? We need to move from research for the sake of knowledge to research that solves real problems. Universities must prepare students to think that way. Startups have created urgency around problem-solving, but long-term research still needs govt and industry support. At the same time, basic research remains crucial, it provides the foundation for applied breakthroughs. So we need balanced investment in both. This requires leadership, clarity, and collaboration among academia, industry, and govt.■ How do you see AI & other emerging tech influencing research & recognition?Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool, and like any major technological change, it brings misconceptions. But we must approach it positively and see how it can strengthen research. ISF's role is to recognise excellence, regardless of the field, and create a climate that nurtures such innovation — be it quantum computing, clean energy, or biotechnology.
