BANGALORE: In a shocking incident, an advocate attempted suicide in the presence of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph on Monday. The incident took place minutes after the chief justice entered the court room. The advocate, Vasanth Kumar (27), was shifted to Bowring Hospital, where his condition is said to be critical. Vasanth, from Eslur in Sakaleshpura taluk, allegedly drank half a bottle of poison before entering the courtroom.
As the court proceedings began, Vasanth stood up with a document in his hands. He suddenly slumped to the ground and started frothing. The court staff shifted him to a hospital on the court premises.
Later, he was rushed to Bowring Hospital. He had not consumed all the poison in the bottle. In the evening, he was shifted to Victoria Hospital, a senior police officer said. In his hand-written petition, Vasanth has accused Sakleshpura Rural police of harassing his family over a criminal case. Vasanth stated he has been named as one of the accused in the murder of Hoovanna Gowda on September 30, 2007. The four-page petition referred to the chief justice stated: I have requested all senior police officials to protect my family. A false case has been registered against me and my family. My ill-fated family is facing all types of problems. I apologize to my family for taking this extreme step. Please hand over the case to CoD. He had also petitioned the governor on this matter. Vasanth was practising under advocate Srinivas in Sheshadripuram.
