Karnataka bans obscene songs, vulgar dances in schools; students told to wear modest attire
BENGALURU: The Karnataka school education department has directed govt, aided and unaided schools to ban students from performing obscene songs during school programmes.
In an April 16 directive, the department instructed deputy directors (administration) to enforce the ban strictly and take action against school managements if violations are found. It has asked institutions to ensure students "wear modest attire" while participating in performances.
Schools have been asked to avoid songs considered vulgar and instead use music that is inspiring, value-based and reflective of culture. The department has encouraged the use of songs that promote positive messages, patriotism and cultural heritage.
The circular holds headmasters and school managements responsible for the selection of songs and choreography during events.
Emphasising that schools are spaces for shaping children's values and character, the circular noted that performances perceived as inappropriate could negatively impact students' mental well-being, discipline and moral development.
"Performing such dances will have a bad impact on the mental health and moral values of children. This will create indiscipline and will harm the sanctity of education," the circular said.
The move follows a representation from Karnataka Rakshina Vedike Swabhimani Bana (Bengaluru unit) earlier this year, raising concerns about the nature of songs and dances being performed in some school events.
