During interrogation, Nawaz said LeT had plans to assassinate many scientists.
"Nawaz attended a meeting with Jasim and Ali, both members of LeT in Muscat. A lot of things came up in the discussion on how to carry out terror activities in India. This included attacks on top scientists in the state. Nawaz told us these things were still at the discussion level," a senior police officer said.
Nawaz told the police he had come to Bangalore during the recce conducted for carrying out the serial blasts. He met Aftab alias Nazir, who funded and monitored the blasts. "Nazir took instructions from Nawaz, who took them from the LeT. He passed on money he received from LeT supporters in Muscat. This was the link between the self-styled Shahabuddin Gowri brigade and the LeT," the officer added.
Nawaz joined SIMI in 1995 and had attended the Nadwat-ul-Ulema in Lucknow. He started working at the SIMI headquarters, New Delhi, in 2000. There, he came into contact with Safdar Nagori, Abdul Aleem Islahi, Adnan alias Nazir, Shibly and others who operated in South India.
