BANGALORE: The Karnataka government has notified the list of general holidays for the year 2003: January 1 - Sankranti; February 12 - Bakrid; March 1 - Shivaratri; March 14 - last day of Muharram; April 2 - Ugadi; April 14 - Ambedkar Jayanti; April 15 - Mahaveer Jayanti; April 18 - Good Friday; May 1 - May Day; May 15 - Id-Milad; August 15 - Independence Day; September 25 - Mahalaya Amavasya; October 2 - Gandhi Jayanti; October 4 - Ayudha Pooja; October 24 - Naraka Chaturdashi; November 1 - Kannada Rajyotsava; November 26 - Khutub-e-Ramzan and December 25 - Christmas.
The list does not include Republic Day (January 26) Basava Jayanti (May 4) Varasiddi Vinayaka Vratha (August 31), Vijayadashami (October 5), Balipadyami/Deepavali (October 26), which falls on Sundays, and Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 8) which falls on second Saturday.
All government offices will be closed on general holidays. If any of the Muslim festivals does not fall on the notified date, Muslims in government service can be granted holiday on the date of observance in lieu of the holiday notified.
Local holidays for Kodagu district only have been declared for Tula Sankramana (October 18) and for Huthri festival (December 9).
Separate list of holidays will be published by the Commissioner for Public Instruction for the education department.
