MANGALORE: Campus Initiative, a non-governmental organisation working with college students in Mangalore, is setting up a `Film Club' for college students in collaboration with Al Madhyam, the communications club of St Aloysius College.

the screenings held at st alyosius college, will be free of cost, and also open to the public. the film club will also hold special screenings periodically and organise film festivals. the film club will begin operations on august 25 (saturday - 12 noon), with the italian film `bicycle thieves' (1948), directed by vittorio de sica. this is a film ranked among the top 10 films of all time by film critics world over, while being one of the best loved films by audiences everywhere. the objective of the film club is to introduce college students to the classics of world cinema. films will be selected from masterpieces made by the most important directors, over the last hundred years, from countries in every continent. the films will have sub-titles in english. the film club will do more than bring rare films to its members. the screenings will be followed by discussions. the film club is intended to be a forum for film buffs in mangalore to meet and talk cinema. ajit hari, who is the general secretary of campus initiative, said discussions will be held in simple english, without esoteric and intellectual jargon. the film club will help to remove misconceptions about the nature of serious cinema, he said adding that the members of the club will discover that some of the greatest classics are also more entertaining than most popular films. these discussions will include analysis and appreciation of popular cinema from india and america and will be moderated by hari. details of the screenings can be obtained from fr richard rego, department of journalism, st aloysius college or from campus initiative at 411332.
