mangalore: the institution of engineers (india), mangalore local centre, kodagu, dakshina kannada and udupi engineers association and manipal institute of technology (mit), manipal will conduct a technical seminar on `removing rural urban disparity,' on the occasion of 34th engineers' day celebrations, at manipal on friday. dr b.m. hegde, vice-chancellor, manipal academy of higher education (mahe) will inaugurate the session and dr l.r.
kadiyali, former chief engineer, ministry of surface transport and director, highway engineering consulting firm, new delhi, will deliver the keynote address. dr b.s. samaga, chairman of the institute told reporters here on wednesday that the institution of engineers (india), with its headquarters at kolkata, was the biggest single national society for engineers, currently having over 76,000 corporate members from various engineering disciplines and over 3.5 lakh student members. it has presently 17 state centres and 74 local centres spread all over the country, including two overseas centres - one at bahrain and the other at qatar. the mangalore local centre, established in 1988, currently has a membership of 363 corporate members and 400 student members. he said that engineers' day was celebrated all over the country, to remember the greatest engineer m. visvesvaraya on his birthday. in connection with the celebrations, apart from the technical seminar, a technical quiz will also be conducted for engineering and polytechnic students, to help improve their general calibre and employability, he added. also `engineers day award' will be conferred on two eminent engineers of the region, who have delivered yeomen service in their profession. regarding the activities of the institution of engineers (india) and kodagu, dk and udupi engineers' association, he said it organises fortnightly local activities which include seminars and lectures on topics of current interest in management, leadership, information technology and safety and environmental aspects. the institute also has its own building at nmpt campus, panambur and conducts amie coaching classes in collaboration with the association.
