Deputy CM claims 65% potholes fixed, Bengalureans sceptical

BENGALURU: If the words of the deputy

chief minister

are to be taken seriously, the city has been rid of 65%

potholes

.

G Parameshwara, who has been vocal about his government’s commitment to ensure potholes don’t torment the state capital again, tweeted that 4,944 of 7,537 potholes had been filled by the

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike

(BBMP) as on Sunday evening.

“Happy to inform you that around 4,944 out of 7,537 potholes have been filled by BBMP so far. The rapid progress of work illustrates the dedication of our BBMP team. Let’s keep up the momentum. With your constant support, we will be able to transform Bengaluru,” read a tweet from his official handle.

While the figure (7,537) is greater than the official number of potholes (5,800) quoted by the BBMP in its report to the CM earlier this month, citizens are cynical about the claim that only 2,593 craters remain in the city.

Doddathoguru resident Ashwathy Krishnan, who travels to Electronics City every day, said there has been no change in the state of the road. “The stretch is exactly the same, dotted with large potholes, for the last four months. It turns slippery and muddy after rain. Otherwise, it’s hazardous for commuters. Nobody has come to this area to fix the roads and no change has been visible in the last four months,” she said.

Nisara Ahmed from Sarvagnanagar too does not see any discernible change in roads. “While some work has been taken up, the situation is largely the same. Only short-term measures are being employed to fill potholes. Contractors cut roads at the drop of a hat and fill the cracks with mud instead of concrete,” he said.
