Contractor suicide in Bidar: 2 head constables suspended for dereliction of duty

NEW DELHI: Two head constables stationed at the Gandhi Gunj police station in Bidar have been suspended for negligence following the suicide of a 26-year-old contractor, who died after lying in front of a train, police reported on Saturday.
The officers, identified as Rajesh Chelva and Shamala, were suspended on Friday for failing to register a missing person's complaint when the victim’s family sought assistance at the police station.

"Instead of lodging a complaint and registering an FIR, the head constables directed the family to approach the Dhannur police station, claiming the victim was from Katti Tugaon village," a senior police official stated. The officers were subsequently suspended for their dereliction of duty, he confirmed.

The deceased, Sachin Panchal, a resident of Tungadakatti in Bhalki Taluk, Bidar, had taken on a contract under the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department. Panchal tragically took his own life on Thursday.

In his suicide note, Panchal accused former councillor Raju Kapanur and seven others of driving him to take the fatal step. Kapanur is reportedly a close associate of Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge.

Minister Kharge, responding to the incident, stated that he had become aware of the matter through media reports. He assured the public that he would personally advocate for a thorough inquiry to uncover the truth.
