Bengaluru bottleneck: 1,500 new vehicles hit city roads every day, turning commutes into crawl

Bengaluru’s road length has remained around 13,000 km for a decade, even as the city expanded, creating a mismatch between infrastructure capacity and increasing traffic demands

Registered vehicles jumped from 64.4 lakh in 2015 to over 1.2 crore in 2025, representing a 90% increase, putting tremendous pressure on already congested streets.

On average, around 1,500 new vehicles are added to Bengaluru roads every day, with some months, like October, seeing as many as 2,700, worsening traffic congestion consistently.

The majority of new vehicles are privately owned, with two-wheelers and cars forming the largest share, highlighting a heavy reliance on personal transport over public options.

Two-wheeler registrations doubled from 41.8 lakh to 84.6 lakh over ten years, reflecting growing dependence on motorcycles and scooters for daily commuting in the city.

Car registrations increased from 14.2 lakh to nearly 24.4 lakh, significantly contributing to traffic congestion, as more families opt for personal vehicles instead of shared or public transport.

Despite soaring vehicle numbers, Bengaluru’s bus fleet remains at about 7,000, showing that public transport expansion has not kept pace with the city’s rapid growth.

Bengaluru has only 96 km of operational Metro lines with 83 stations, insufficient for a city of its size, leaving millions dependent on road-based transport and worsening congestion.

With roads not expanding and public transport lagging, commuters face daily bottlenecks, long travel times, and increasing stress, turning Bengaluru’s streets into an almost constant traffic grind.

The city’s explosive growth in population and vehicles is far ahead of infrastructure development, highlighting urgent need for widening roads and scaling public transport to match demand.
