As post offices reinvent themselves as one-stop banking solution, demand for services spikes in Karnataka
Bengaluru: With India Post increasingly positioning itself as a financial services provider rather than just a traditional mail delivery system, Karnataka is seeing a steady expansion of its postal network. In the past three years, the department has opened 45 new post offices in the state, signaling a shift in focus toward banking and citizen services. This growth comes despite a consolidation trend. Between 2013-14 and 2024-25, 126 post offices were merged, Union govt data shows. Yet, the total number of post offices has still risen—from 9,617 in 2022 to 9,662 in 2025, data tabled in the Lok Sabha shows. Officials attribute the expansion largely to increased demand in North Karnataka — home to many of the new post offices. These operate under the core banking solutions (CBS) system, allowing customers to efficiently access banking services. A key driver behind this transformation is the collaboration between India Post and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), which has strengthened financial inclusion in rural and remote areas. Over the past five years, Karnataka citizens have opened 48.5 lakh IPPB accounts, enabling 23 crore direct benefit transfer transactions worth Rs 28,387.3 crore. It shows a growing role of post offices in delivering govt subsidies, pensions, and welfare benefits directly to citizens — especially in remote areas where access to conventional banking remains limited. The postal department is now aiming to expand its presence further by ensuring services reach gram panchayat level. "There is a demand mostly in rural areas for services like Aadhaar and banking solutions," a postal department official said. "Our aim is to have a post office in every nook and corner of the state." District-wise data shows Belagavi leads with 721 post offices, followed by Tumakuru (566). Smaller districts such as Chikkaballapura and Ramanagara have 199 and 183 post offices, respectively. In Bengaluru, the network is divided between 280 urban and 131 rural post offices. Prakash K, chief postmaster general, Karnataka Circle, said: "We plan post offices depending on the size of the area. That's why Belagavi has the highest number because, geographically, it's a huge district, whereas Mangaluru and smaller districts have fewer offices due to their compact size. For every unit of area and population, we are mandated to open post offices, so our network ensures that every citizen, even in the remotest village, is covered. No private player can match this reach." Officials say besides banking and DBT, citizens increasingly visit post offices for services like insurance, Speed Post facilities and passport-related services. Their affordability, reliability, and familiarity have helped maintain public trust. "Since the network ensures govt payments, financial services, and documents reach every corner of Karnataka, people see this as the most trusted option. India Post is one of the major centres in the country, providing 35 services and products and covers lakhs of people across the state," the postmaster said.
