100 sanitation workers’ kin not entitled to compensation or jobs in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: The families of over 100 deceased sanitation workers, whose services were regularised under the erstwhile BBMP (now GBA), are not entitled to any compensation or jobs after their deaths.This is because their services were regularised under supernumerary posts from May 2025. "Even in the earlier direct payment system before regularisation, compensation of Rs 10 lakh would be given to the family of the deceased pourakarmika. Currently, there is neither compensation nor a compassionate job. The families only receive Rs 15,000 for last rites," Karnataka State Municipal Pourakarmikas' Union state chief general secretary Muniraju said."Jobs are given to children or kin of deceased govt staff, according to Karnataka Civil Services Rules. However, none of the families of those regularised since May 2025 have been given a job after the worker's death," Muniraju added. GBA deputy commissioner (admin) Ravindra Karalingannavar said compassionate posting in case of supernumerary posts was a policy decision and needs to be decided by govt.Pourakarmikas also want the rest of the workers to be regularised by the GBA head office and not the five corporations, citing slow progress. Over 90% of those selected for regularisation have been given recruitment certificates, with around 10% pending. The union leaders alleged that the corporations are not moving files quickly and requested GBA to take back the files and process them at the head office.
