NEW DELHII: Congress MP Rajiv Shukla on Tuesday said that Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by a delegation of Congress leaders, have departed for Sambhal.

"Rahul Gandhi and the Congress delegation have left for Sambhal directly from Parliament," Shukla told ANI.

The visit follows a stone-pelting incident that occurred on November 24 when a team arrived to survey the Shahi Jama Masjid.

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP over the Sambhal incident, accusing the ruling party of "insensitive actions" in handling the violence. He alleged that their approach was exacerbating divisions and fostering discrimination between Hindu and Muslim communities.

Meanwhile, a 12-member delegation from the Samajwadi Party is also set to visit the affected area on Tuesday.

Samajwadi Party leader and Uttar Pradesh Assembly's Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey stated that the delegation aims to investigate "police atrocities" in the aftermath of the incident.

"We will meet the families of the youth who lost their lives in the violence. Do the police ever take responsibility for their actions? These days, they carry both government-issued and illegal weapons, using the latter to fire shots," Pandey claimed.

Earlier today, markets in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal reopened following the unrest caused by the stone-pelting incident. Deputy Inspector General of Police for Moradabad Range, Muniraj G, reported that the situation in Sambhal has normalized.

"The situation is stable, and the markets are operating normally. People need not worry. Innocent individuals will not face punishment. So far, seven FIRs have been registered, and suspects are being identified using video footage," DIG Muniraj said.

The Opposition has raised the issue in Parliament, criticizing the Yogi Adityanath government for its handling of the violence.

The survey at Shahi Jama Masjid was part of a legal process following a petition filed by senior advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, who claimed the mosque was originally a temple.
