Locals panic as earthquake rumour spreads

BAREILLY

: Hundreds of people came out of their houses on Saturday around 11 pm after rumours of an earthquake spread in few localities of the city. The rumours were fuelled after mosques in the area conducted azaan for the safety of people. Mufti Ahsan Raza Qadri, sajjadanasheen of Aala Hazrat dargah, on Sunday asked mosques’ imams not to conduct azaan without any investigation as the work of imam is to stop rumours.

After rumours of an earthquake spread, locals panicked and came out of their houses. The people continued to stay out till 2 am.

Nasir Qureshi of Aala Hazrat dargah said, “The rumours started spreading from the old city, including Kankartola, Qazitola and Rohilatola, and scores of people came out of their houses. We received many calls at the dargah and when these people were informed that was a rumour, locals of the old city went inside their homes but the

spread in other parts of the city, including Azam Nagar, Jasoli, Biharipur, Zakhira, Hussain Bagh and Katghar.”

“Azaan is conducted five times a day. If it is conducted more than five times then it is for a cause. When azaan was conducted at different parts of the city, residents assumed that it was done to stop the calamity. Nearly 30 percent mosques conducted azaan in the city.”
