Bareilly: Two persons were killed, and a woman suffered severe burn injuries after an 11,000-volt high-tension current entered residential power lines in Sudanpur village in Aliganj area on Saturday morning.
Residents said the high-tension current surged into the village’s 440-volt domestic lines, likely due to a transformer fault. Subhash, 17, a Class 10 student, was stepping out for school when he came in contact with the current near his house entrance. His mother, Sunita Devi, sustained burns while trying to rescue him and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Kunwar Pal, 24, who had a disability in one leg and ran a small tailoring business from home, died after the current entered his residence. He was the third of four brothers and the primary earner of his family. An e-rickshaw in the area also caught fire following the surge.
R P Singh, Subhash’s cousin who was present at the spot, said that “villagers had earlier complained to the electricity department about voltage fluctuations in the transformer, but no action was taken”.
Chief engineer of the electricity department, Gyan Prakash, said financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each will be provided to the families of the deceased. He added that the department will bear the full cost of Sunita’s treatment. “One eligible family member (above 21 years) from each of the deceased’s families will be offered a contractual job,” he said, adding that the department has also constituted a high-level inquiry committee, and action will be taken against those found negligent.
