(PWD) has decided to observe a cleanliness drive in its offices on the first Sunday of every month. The aim, officials said, was to create awareness among people about keeping their surroundings clean.

Speaking to TOI, head of PWD Lucknow, VK Singh said, “On the lines of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’, now PWD is gearing up to launch cleanliness drives in all its offices on the first Sunday of every month. Everyone, including senior departmental officials and junior employees will be participating in the drive and ensure that their surroundings are clean and free of filth. Directions on the campaign have been issued by deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.”

Singh added, “With the implementation of this special initiative, we hope employees in government offices become sensitive to cleanliness-related issues.”

According to officials at PWD, other government offices, schools and institutions across the state will also adopt the cleanliness drive.

Workers however didn’t appear to be apprehensive about having to come to office on a Sunday. "Although we haven’t yet received any official circular in this connection, we will actively participate in the campaign once it is implemented,” said HN

“It is a good initiative of the UP government. Dedicating an entire day to maintaining cleanliness will help raise awareness among people,” said PWD chief engineer, Bareilly division, Himanshu Mittal.

Singh also said, “There is a need to organize such campaigns as the condition of the government organizations has steadily been deteriorating. After the campaign, departmental officials will inspect the spots and make sure they were properly cleaned.”
