Man hacks elderly father to death after court orders physical handover of property

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Soon after the court-ordered handover of physical possession of a property to an elderly man, the 84-year-old was allegedly hacked to death by his son at Silk Mill Colony in the city on Thursday, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar police said. The suspect was arrested later in the evening.“Preliminary probe suggests Abdul Rahman Patel, a pharmacist, attacked his father, Jafar Kamruddin Patel, with a sharp-edged weapon after losing possession of the property following a court order,” said crime branch inspector Gajanan Kalyankar.Jafar Patel’s daughter, who tried to intervene, was seriously injured and is undergoing treatment, he added.According to inspector Krishna Shinde, of the Satara police station, the handover was carried out lawfully. “The court had directed that the property be given to Jafar Patel. Officials from the SDM office, along with police personnel, completed the process and handed over possession,” he said.After the formalities, officials and police personnel stepped outside the house. Moments later, Jafar Patel re-entered the premises to ensure it was secured. That is when Abdul Patel allegedly struck him using a sharp-edged weapon, the police said and added that when Abdul’s sister rushed in to save her father, she too was assaulted.
Hearing the commotion, police personnel rushed back, but the accused had fled by then. Both victims were taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared Jafar Patel dead during treatment, while his daughter continues to remain under care.A senior officer said Abdul Patel has since been arrested.Police commissioner Pravin Pawar visited both the hospital and the crime scene as investigators began piecing together the sequence of events.
