CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Widespread rain lashed parts of Marathwada, especially Parbhani (138 mm), Hingoli (134 mm) Jalna (111 mm) districts in the 24 hours ending Monday morning, leaving at least five people dead. Rescue and evacuation operations were on in several parts of the region with assistance from the Army and other agencies.

An official said 284 of the 421 revenue circles of Marathwada reported heavy rainfall, with Pathri (314mm) and Walur (246mm) from Parbhani district and Ghansawangi (280mm) leading the chart.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a "red alert" for Parbhani, Nanded, and Hingoli districts and an orange alert for Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, and Dharashiv districts for Monday. Parts of the three districts having a red alert received spells of light to moderate showers on Monday morning, followed by no major rainfall activity till evening. Hingoli, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Beed, and Latur reported a death each due to the rain-related incidents.

The heavy rain revived several dams in Marathwada, including the Jayakwadi major irrigation project in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar which was nearing the 90% live storage. Authorities said the dam gates might be opened anytime, depending upon the rain quantum.
