AURANGABAD: Nationalist
Congress Party (NCP) chief
Sharad Pawar on Monday announced the formation of an
action committee
to take up the issues of farmers affected by the
Samruddhi Mahamarg
and resolve the differences.
The committee comprising farmers opposing the project, leaders of various political parties and social workers, would meet chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Pawar said he would facilitate the meeting of the farmers with the chief minister.
Pawar said he would urge the chief minister to lend an ear to the issues of the raised by the committee members. "The state government should put on hold the ongoing process of land measurement and negotiations for the proposed Samruddhi Mahamarg till the CM discusses the project with the action committee," he said.
Farmers from all the ten districts through which the proposed expressway would pass attended the seminar organised here on Monday. While speaking at the seminar, Pawer called it a non-political platform, but the event saw participation of leaders from the Congress, the Communist Party of India and other political parties.
NCP leader and former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, opposition leader in legislative council Dhananjay Mundhe, NCP leader Rajesh Tope, CPI leader Bhalchandra Kongo and others were present on the occasion.
Pawar said the committee members will discuss the pros and cons with the government and suggest corrective measures. "We will try to understand the point of view of the government and also give suggestions and raised objections to the mega project," he said.
Considering the three existing roads connecting Mumbai and Nagpur, the action committee would raise questions over the necessity of a fourth road between the two cities. The committee will also discuss the feasibility of widening the existing roads.
"I never oppose developmental projects but it should not affect farmers and common public.
Mega projects
are essential but to accomplish it, the government will not be allowed to jeopardise the existence of farmers," he said.
The proposed state-of- the- art expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Nagpur and Mumbai significantly. It is also expected to develop over 20 new towns between the two cities besides giving boosts to economy of many villages and cities along the way.
