AURANGABAD: A woman and her son were stabbed to death, while her husband and another relative were severely injured for objecting to a group of people allegedly defecating on their farm at a village nearly 120km from the city.
The deceased have been identified as Sumanbai Sillode (55), and her son Mangesh (25). Sumanbai’s husband, Devilal Sillode, and relative, Yogesh, were admitted to Jalna civil hospital, police said on Saturday..
The incident took place late on Friday night at Aerandwadgaon village in the Sevli area. By Saturday morning, five of the accused — Sheetal Shinde, Chakuli Shinde, Ranjana Pawar, Surekha Shinde and Tukaram Shinde — were arrested. The police have sent out teams to nab the five others.
Jalna superintendent of police Akshay Shinde said some of the accused had criminal antecedents. He told TOI, “Prima facie, it appears that the Sillodes were upset over the accused frequently gathering on their (Sillodes’) farm late at night to defecate in the open.”
The Sillodes had on Friday night spotted some of the accused on the farm and questioned them over defecating there, the police said. This led to a argument, which took a violent turn. The accused were carrying sharp-edged weapons and attacked the Sillodes.
The police said by the time the injured were taken to the hospital, two of them had succumbed to multiple deep stab wounds. The other two are battling for their lives at the civil hospital. “It appears that due to the accused people’s alleged involvement in criminal activities, the villagers abstained from approaching the police against them,” said an officer, who was part of the team that visited the village.
