BATHINDA: Ravneet Kaur defeated her sister-in-law Harpreet Kaur by 23 votes for the
sarpanch
's posr at at Kothe Ishar Singh Wala village in
Barnala district
on Sunday.
Ravneet polled 145 votes, while Harpreet got 112. Both are married to first cousins, but the families are not on talking terms and support rival parties. The village has only 286 votes. Of these, 267 were cast and 10 were rejected. Ravneet is married to Birinder Singh
Zaildar
, who belongs to
Shiromani Akali Dal. He was the local zila parishad's chairperson when the SAD-BJP alliance was in power. Harpreet's family is with the Congress.
For the past five terms, no election was held in the village as there used to be unanimity.
