CHITTOOR: Five people, including four Spanish nationals, were killed in a road accident in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district on Saturday morning. The accident took place in Edigapalli under Punganur mandal when a Traveller tempo carrying 13 people was hit by a container truck. Out of the eight injured, three are critical.
The deceased have been identified as Moran Molinillo Josefa, 65, Pedrosa Gijon Francisco, 31, Lopez Navarro Maria Nieves, 62, Perez Moreno Vicente, 50 and their driver Sadiq Vali, 49.
The Spanish nationals had come to India to volunteer at Rural Development Trust (RDT), an NGO, at Battulapalli in Anantapur district. After visiting the RDT centre at Anantapur, the Spanish nationals were on their way to Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu from Anantapur.
Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the accident and directed officials to take up rescue work and extended all possible help from the government. He told them to get in touch with the embassy of Spain for necessary arrangements.
According to Madanapalle DSP V Narayanaswamy Reddy, the accident was caused due to rash driving by the container truck driver. Following the fatal collision, the spot was identified as accident prone and a warning sign was installed. "The truck driver hit the Traveller head-on as he failed to negotiate the curve at Yatalavanka," the DSP said, adding that the container truck driver fled from the scene after the collision.
Chittoor district collector PS Pradyumna and has ordered a post-mortem of the victims. He has also asked authorities to hand over their bodies to the relatives. SP Rajasekhar Babu said the injured people have been sent to Bengaluru for better treatment, where they are admitted at Columbia-Asia Hospital in Bangalore.
