Prayagraj: The Sangam city witnessed the hottest day of the season so far on Friday, with the maximum temperature soaring to 44°C while the minimum settled at 22.2°C, intensifying heatwave-like conditions and disrupting normal life.
The sharp rise comes after already high readings earlier in the week, with Thursday recording a maximum of 43.0°C and minimum of 22.8°C, and Wednesday touching 43°C with a low of 21.8°C.
The continuous rise in temperature over the past few days has left residents struggling to cope with the harsh weather. Streets, markets and public places are witnessing reduced footfall during the day, as people prefer to stay indoors.
Weather conditions have remained dry, with low humidity levels adding to discomfort. Relative humidity on Friday was recorded at 34% (max) and 15% (min). Experts point out that while temperatures usually rise during this time of the year, crossing the 44°C mark this early in the season is a matter of concern.
The sustained high temperatures are not only affecting daily routines but are also beginning to impact public health.
Hospitals across the city, both govt and private, are reporting an increase in heat-related illnesses, particularly among children. Pediatric departments are witnessing a heavy influx of patients, with doctors attending to hundreds of cases daily, including dehydration, fever and heat exhaustion.
In some cases, hospital wards are running at full capacity.
Despite the challenging conditions, seasonal businesses are witnessing a surge. Shops selling cold drinks, ice creams, juices and traditional beverages like lassi are seeing brisk sales as people look for ways to stay cool.
According to weather experts, the prevailing heat conditions are likely to continue for the next few days as there will not be any relief for the next week too.
