Over 1.14 lakh apply for UPPSC asst prof posts
Prayagraj: The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) has received an overwhelming response for the recruitment of assistant professors in govt degree colleges, with 1,14,955 applications submitted for 1,253 posts.
This recruitment drive came after a gap of five years, reflecting strong competition across subjects and highlighting the high demand for teaching positions in higher education. According to official data, competition is particularly intense in several subjects. Computer science has emerged as the most competitive field, with 573 applicants for a single post. Education also shows high pressure, with 472 candidates per post. Similarly, history has 194 applicants per post, political science 184, and Hindi 185 applicants per post. In Urdu, 262 candidates have applied for just three posts.
Among subjects with larger vacancies, commerce leads with 157 posts, where an average of 54 candidates are competing for each seat. Hindi remains the most popular subject overall, with 16,098 applications, followed by history (11,272) and political science (10,519). Other major subjects include commerce (8,423), geography (7,741), education (6,616), sociology (6,163) and botany (5,864).
Applications have also been received in science and other streams such as chemistry (5,403), English (4,866), zoology (4,437), sanskrit (4,315), mathematics (3,916), physics (3,852) and economics (3,780). In specialised and niche subjects, applicants include home science (2,991), physical education (1,820), painting (1,582), psychology (1,537), music disciplines, military science (263), statistics (290), persian (82) and others.
Officials said that for the first time, the selection process will follow a three-stage system on the lines of PCS examinations, marking a significant change in recruitment procedure. The preliminary examination is scheduled for May 31, while the main examination is planned between Sept 15 and Oct 1.
The commission has urged candidates to regularly check the official website for updates regarding admit cards and examination guidelines as preparations for the large-scale recruitment move forward.
