ALLAHABAD: High drama prevailed in Govindpur Colony late on Friday night when a man, said to be mentally unstable, locked himself and his family in his house and attacked the police with acid when they tried to rescue them.

Nearly a dozen people, including seven policemen, sustained burns in the incident. Station officer (SO), Shivkuti, Vinod Dinkar said the accused Rajiv Sinha, 35, was mentally unstable. As sparks flew, Pyarelal Sinha, a retired teacher, called the police informing them that his son Rajiv had thrown acid on his younger son Sumit and held the entire family hostage in their house. He said Rajiv was threatening to kill them. A police team, led by SHO Umesh Singh, rushed to the spot.

When the police tried to rescue the family, Rajiv got agitated and threw acid on the police team. Sub-inspector Rahul Parmar and some other policemen received serious burns and were rushed to SRN Hospital.

"It took four hours for the police and fire brigade to break in and rescue the family. At least seven policemen and the family members of the accused were injured in acid attack. We have arrested the accused and sent him to jail," the station officer said.

SP (city) Srivastava said the man might be suffering from some mental illness and got violent.
