Mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf shot dead in Prayagraj; all three assailants caught by police

PRAYAGRAJ: In a dramatic turn of events, mafia-turned politician-Atiq Ahmed and his younger brother, Khalid Azim alias Ashraf were shot dead in presence of heavy police force by unidentified assailants in front of Motilal Nehru divisional hospital in Prayagraj on Saturday night.

Both Atiq and his brother Ashraf were being taken for medical examination by the police.

Earlier at around 8pm they were taken to some of the spots at Chakiya locality after being interrogated at Dhoomanganj police station of Prayagraj. On their information, police had recovered two foreign-made pistols and around 58 cartridges. Sources said that five of these live cartridges were made in Pakistan.
After being taken to the spots in Chakia, a police team was taking both the brothers handcuffed at Colvin Hospital to get the examination done.
According to the reports, as both were being taken to the hospital, many media persons were taking their interview and suddenly some unidentified assailants arrived at the spot on a bike and fired several rounds at both the brothers, killing them on the spot.
The entire incident occurred not only in the presence of heavy police personnel but also media.
One of the police personnel was also injured in the shootout.
The bodies of the duo have been sent to the mortuary at SRN hospital of the city.
All three assailants caught by police
All the three assailants have been caught by the police and are being interrogated.
ACP Kareli Shwetang Pandey confirmed that there were three assailants who had been arrested.
The three attackers arrived at the scene pretending to be members of the media. Even though it was an old model, they were carrying a video camera. Additionally, they were carrying some homemade media channel identification.
The police have recovered several rounds of empty cartridges of the weapon which was used to kill Atiq and Ashraf.
While shooting the two, the attackers shouted slogans of "Jai Shree Ram".
