Georgetown swimming pool to reopen in May
Prayagraj: After remaining shut for several years, the Georgetown Swimming Pool is set to reopen, bringing much-needed relief to swimmers in the city. The Sports department has announced that training activities will resume from May, initially through the smaller pool, while work on the main facility nears completion.
The swimming complex, spread across a 25x50-metre area with a depth ranging from 6 to 18 feet, has been undergoing renovation with an approved budget of over Rs 3.37 crore. Once fully operational, the upgraded facility is expected to host national and even international-level competitions, reviving Prayagraj’s presence on the competitive swimming map.
The pool remained closed since 2019, with renovation deadlines repeatedly extended. Over time, the campus fell into disrepair, and even newly installed machines began to deteriorate due to delays. However, recent inspections by District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma have accelerated the process, with clear instructions to complete the remaining work within a month.
“The key pending works include installation of tube wells, pipeline systems, lighting, toilets and the main entrance. All essential repairs and beautification work — including changing rooms and basic infrastructure — will be completed by May,” said Regional Sports Officer Prem Kumar.
The reopening is particularly significant as many young swimmers were forced to practise in the Yamuna due to lack of facilities, posing serious safety risks. Last year, a tragic drowning incident highlighted the urgency of restoring a safe swimming environment.
Experts have also emphasised the need to upgrade critical features such as the pool deck, diving boards, filtration systems, lifeguard stands, ladders, lighting and racing blocks to meet competitive standards.
Originally inaugurated in 2004, the pool has produced around 50 national and over 100 state-level swimmers.
