PRAYAGRAJ: Students of Allahabad University (AU) protesting the recent fee hike have called for a maha panchayat on the campus to muster support from political parties.

The maha panchayat could be held on the campus either on Saturday or Monday (September 26). The student leaders have also shaved their heads as a mark of protest.

The protestors are in an upbeat mood after Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday raised the issue in the state assembly.

SP president had raised the issue of fee hike by Allahabad University as well as the issue of students’ union.

One of the student leaders of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, Ajay Yadav ‘Samrat’ has been leading a protest on the campus for around 800 days demanding student union elections that have scrapped since 2019.

“We are happy and thankful to our leader for raising the issue in the state assembly because here at AU, there is no one to hear our demand,” said Ajay Yadav.

The Friday’s protest coincided with the foundation day of AU which was formed on September 23, 1887.

Because of the ongoing protests, the AU administration has not organised any function to mark the day.
