AHMEDABAD: While the rest of India was cheering their favourite F1 team from the audience box, Anmol Mehta, 19 year-old F1 fanatic from Ahmedabad, witnessed the heat from the garage of the speed monsters.
Anmol was the only candidate from West India to be officially selected by Federation Internationale de L'Automobile (International Federation of Automobiles) as part of a team of 24 specially appointed scrutineers.
This team has the power to inspect the racing cars at any point during a Grand Prix weekend to ensure that the cars fully comply with technical and safety regulations. Anmol, a law student at Gujarat University says, "I have been a fan of the sport since I was 10 years old! So when I came to know about the Indian Grand Prix, I didn't want to miss the opportunity."
However, his mails to the FIA, to be part of scrutineers, were constantly ignored for a few months. "They didn't reply to my mails but after persistent efforts of months, they replied back to me. They took a few interviews, asked me for my CV and I was the part for the Torro-Rosso, (Italian Red Bull team)", said Anmol.
With a law background, and a keen interest in motor-sport, Anmol was specially trained by the FIA, to be a scrutineer on the Buddh International Circuit, on several occasions before the big event. Sharing the experience of the atmosphere in the garage of an F1 team, he smugly replies, "I was in Torro-Rosso's garage on Friday, Saturday as well as with them on the grid before the start of the race and believe me watching an F1 race from the stands in no way comparable to the experience of watching the same from inside the team garage!" Anmol said.
