Ahmedabad: Union HRD minister Smriti Irani on Tuesday launched a book on Mathematics titled 'MATHS: My Advent for Theorems, Hypothesis and Solutions' written by a city-based chemical engineering student Bhavya Shah. This is Shah's first book.

Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, vice-chancellor of Mumbai University, who has written the foreword of the book, was also present at its launch.

"This book helps learning the concepts of the mathematics in simplified manner with the help of block diagrams and models. The teaching and studying methods are developed in such a manner that it even helps students who have phobia about mathematics," said Shah.

Dr Deshmukh says in the foreword, "Bhavya demonstrates through the book that ideas which could be difficult to comprehend using one approach many times, can get simplified using the other. This book can be useful to develop spatial intelligence in students."

Teaching maths through models was an idea that came to Bhavya's mind when his housemaid's son scored higher marks in English than in Mathematics. "This was quite surprising given the fact that his parents had never learnt English and neither could he afford any kind of private coaching. I realized that the low marks in mathematics were due to his inability to understand most concepts. Hence, keeping the idea of 'visualization and understanding the concepts' in mind, I started working on this book," added Shah who took three years to complete the book.
