Ahmedabad: Gayatri Sankaran, who was born blind, was in Ahmedabad on Saturday, at the instance of Ahmedabad Tamil Sangham , for a music concert at Andhajan Mandal near IIM-A . She enthralled the audience with her spectacular collection of Carnatic and light music. Tamil Sangham will be spending the amount collected for the welfare of blind.
A disciple of Lalgudi Jayaraman, Gayatri is also an excellent violinist.
She prepared for all her music exams by listening to her lessons recorded in an audiotape. She has enthralled audiences across the country and abroad with her enchanting voice and lively rendition of kritis at different sabhas and religious centres.
"I owe a lot to my grandmother and and sister-in-law under whose care I grew up since I lost my mother when I was six years old. After marriage , my husband stood like a pillar supporting me in every way," says Gayatri. She has received several awards like Surmani, Isai Chudar, Gana Kuyil (from Canada Hindu Cultural Council) and National Award for Role Model in 2005. This year, GoI also conferred Padma Shri on her.
