Ahmedabad: After four years of proceedings, the Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its order on an appeal against Gujarat high court's order to fund the restoration and repair of the religious structures that were damaged during the 2002 riots in Gujarat. The state government had moved the apex court after then chief justice of the Gujarat high court, Bhaskar Bhattacharya, held in February 2012 that the damage done to religious structures was due to negligence and inefficiency on part of the state government to curb the violence, and hence it is liable to pay for the damages.

The petitioner in this case - Islamic Relief Committee, Gujarat (IRC) and the state government could not reach a compromise on payment to trusts towards damages and the case was heard at length by the apex court. The SC also raised a question about whether a state government can be asked to fund restoration of religious places.
