AHMEDABAD: A 43-year-old man from the Satellite area of the city, who runs a tour operating firm, on Saturday filed a complaint with Anandnagar police stating that he lost Rs 5.26 lakh to cybercrooks even though he did not share the OTP (one-time password) or any other banking details to anyone.

According to the complainant, Chintan Shah, a resident of Sun Divine-2 Apartments in Satellite, he did not even receive messages of money deductions.

Shah said in his FIR that he runs a tour operating firm at the Titanium City Centre in Anandnagar and has a current account with a private bank. He said that he keeps checking his banking transactions every two-three days. On January 25, when Shah was checking his account, he found that Rs 5.26 lakh was debited from his bank account in three transactions on January 22.

He said that he went to his bank and took the account statement to enquire how the money was debited without his knowledge and who withdrew the amount. Shah found that the money was debited between 4pm and 4.30pm on January 22.

Shah then filed a complaint with the city Cybercrime police and his plea was transferred to Anandnagar police for investigation. Anandnagar police registered a complaint against unknown persons under the charges of the Information Technology Act. Sources in the Cybercrime police said that sometimes these cybercrooks get themselves added to the list of beneficiaries in the account after hacking the system of an account holder and get the money transferred through netbanking. The crooks usually disconnect or swap sim card of the victim to ensure that he or she doesn’t get the OTP. The fraudsters then buy a new sim card in the victim’s name and connect it with the netbanking account to siphon off money.
