Gujarat: Retired cop booked for abetment to suicide
Ahmedabad: Santej police in Gandhinagar on Saturday registered a case of abetment to suicide against a retired police sub-inspector after a retired home department employee, aged around 65, allegedly ended his life following mounting pressure over a loan taken by his son.The complaint was filed by Jwalin Nayak (32), a resident of Sargasan and an employee of Sabarmati Gas Ltd in Gandhinagar. In his complaint, Nayak alleged that retired PSI Shailesh Nayak harassed him and his family over a loan taken last year, which eventually drove his father to suicide.
According to the FIR, Jwalin borrowed Rs 10 lakh from Shailesh Nayak in Feb 2025 to invest in the stock market. The loan was allegedly given at a steep monthly interest rate of 10%. The complainant stated that within weeks of the money being transferred to his bank account, the retired officer began demanding payments under the pretext of interest, penalties, and other charges. Jwalin said that over time, he transferred around Rs 90 lakh in instalments to the accused through bank transactions. Despite this, the accused allegedly continued to demand more money and claimed that Rs 1.5 crore was still pending. The complainant further alleged that in Aug 2025, the accused took away his passport after threatening him. In Oct, the accused allegedly forced Jwalin to accompany him to a notary in Gandhinagar, where he was made to sign documents related to a possession agreement for Jwalin's Sargasan flat. Jwalin's wife's signature was also allegedly taken on the documents under pressure. According to the FIR, the accused later approached Jwalin's father, Prakash Nayak, a retired section officer from the Gujarat home department, and allegedly threatened him over the dues. On Feb 23, Prakash left his house in Sector-4 of Gandhinagar, and later his scooter was found near the Adalaj canal. His body was recovered from the canal three days later. Police said a suicide note found on the deceased's mobile phone mentioned mental harassment over the loan despite large repayments.
