Gujarat boy tops JEE Main exam with 100th percentile, eyes IIT Bombay
Ahmedabad: Nimay Purohit, a student from Rajkot, topped the state in the IIT-Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main in the result declared on Monday, with marks putting him in the 100th, or highest, percentile. He scored 291 out of 300 marks. About 50,000 students from Gujarat appeared in the exam conducted in Jan for entry to IITs and NITs.A student of Innovative International School, Nimay is the son of physiotherapists Darshana and Harshal Purohit. His twin sister, Niya, also scored marks that put her in the 98.3 percentile.
"I started coaching for the exam in Class 9, whereas my sister started in Class 8. While my parents are in the field of healthcare, I was attracted to engineering because of my good foundation in mathematics and my interest in innovation. I intend to score well in JEE Advanced and secure admission in computer science engineering at IIT Bombay," said Nimay. He said that he was sure of a good score as he got the majority of answers right. "I had doubts about only two marks — one I left and another I got wrong in mathematics and chemistry. But I was not sure that I would top the state. The feeling is yet to sink in," he added. "I will appear for the second attempt in April to improve my score and learn from the experience."Contrary to general belief and practice, Nimay said that he did not strictly follow the no social media rule or constant studying. "Dedicated study of about six hours a day can do the trick, provided you have a clear-cut plan. I did not miss playtime or school hours either. I gave myself allocated time daily to pursue interests," he said.Talking about his preparation strategy, Nimay said that he focused on the NCERT syllabus and studied past years' exam patterns and questions thoroughly.
